Rady Children’s Hospital

The Celebrity Classic is about more than just big names and great golf; it’s about giving back to the community of San Diego and reaching out to San Diego children in need. Since its inception in 1999, the Celebrity Classic has raised over $1 million for local San Diego charities, namely Rady Children’s Hospital – San Diego, to ensure that San Diego’s children have the best medical care available to them. These noteworthy donations would not be possible without the generous contributions of the celebrities, businesses, and bidders who support this worthy cause each year.

In 1998, former San Diego Chargers quarterback Stan Humphries was faced with a family crisis. His oldest daughter, Brooke, who was eight-years-old at the time, underwent life-threatening heart surgery to correct a birth defect in her heart. Chargers owner Alex Spanos generously donated $100,000 to aid in the establishment of the Brooke Humphries Fund. Brooke is now a multi-sport star in her hometown of Monroe, LA.

The Brooke Humphries Fund sponsored The “Brooke Humphries Field of Champions,” a football-themed waiting area located in The Children’s Hospital orthopedic department. The waiting area sees more than 33,000 patients annually, presenting young patients with an enjoyable and entertaining sports atmosphere, taking their minds off of the anxiety of being hospitalized. Another crucial contribution from the Brooke Humphries Fund was the purchase of a van for the Rady Children’s Hospital HomeCare program, which helps hospitalized children lead normal lives at home, away from the hospital.

Now in its 11 th year, the Celebrity Classic increased its charitable donations to Rady Children’s and the Brooke Humphries Fund with another generous donation this year. Donations to Rady Children’s Hospital came through silent and live auctions. The Celebrity Classic also promoted events like “Chip For A Trip Challenge,” the “American Airlines Million Miles Hole-In-One Contest,” and the “Putt For A Car Competition,” which took place throughout the Tournament to help raise money for Rady Children’s Hospital.

The Pro Kids mission is to positively impact the lives of inner-city youth by providing programs that promote education, character development, life-skills, and values through the great game of golf.

We aim to hook our kids on golf as a life-long amateur sport and teach them how the rules of the game can be applied to everyday life. This empowers them to excel in school, develop successful careers and become leaders in their communities.

History
Pro Kids Golf Academy, Inc. was founded by former AFL player Ernest H. Wright, Sr. and incorporated as a 501(c) 3 in 1994. That same year, we partnered with the City of San Diego and the San Diego Unified School District to use Colina Park Golf Course as an outdoor classroom to teach life-skills and golf to inner-city kids.

In 1997, we were used as a model for The First Tee, an international organization and became The First Tee of San Diego. We initiated a scholarship program in 1999 awarding $1 million to 80 students over the past ten years. In 2001, with the help of the Building Industry Association, we completed construction of our 7,067 square foot Learning Center. This facility houses the computer lab, a classroom, a community room, a pro shop, and a swing simulator room. The expansion allows us to serve more kids, to add more Learning Center programs and to emphasize academic achievement. In September 2003, a $1.5 million golf course renovation was completed, adding two lakes, 12 bunkers, a nine-hole putting course, a practice putting green, and a driving cage.
